After using the herbicide formula listed below, I saw results within a few hours on bermuda grass, I'll have to wait a while to see if it killed down to the root or not. I did accomplish what I wanted, the grass along my fenceline is basically dead. I applied during the heat of the day (95 degrees) as was recommended. I noticed that areas that were in direct sunlight were effected most quickly.

I also did some further investigation online and included the information below.

As far as an alternative to Roundup, Vinegar seems like a good choice. I havn't done a cost estimate, but I think Roundup is probably less expensive.


Organic alternative to Roundup...

This is what I am going to try this afternoon on some bermuda grass. People I have talked to claim it is more effective than Roundup and totally safe. I will let you know its effect.

Herbicide Formula:

1 gallon of 10% vinegar (pickling vinegar) Add 1 ounce orange oil or d-limonene (3-4 ounces of lemon juice can replace orange oil) 1 teaspoon liquid soap or other surfactant Do not add water

Spot spray weeds and keep the spray off desirable plants. This spray will injure any plants it touches.


The Value of Vinegar -- AN UPDATE Last month the Farmer & Rancher ran a story from the Agricultural Research Service about killing weeds with vinegar. We had so many phone calls and emails we were compelled to look into the matter deeper.

After contacting the writer, Don Comis, in Washington D.C., we now have a bevy of information on the subject. Seems Mr. Comis was inundated with calls and emails also, from as far away as Canada.

It seems that store-bought vinegar is a 5% solution. It actually has the ability to wither certain plants, but for a full-on kill, you need at least a 10% solution. Vinegar is actually acetic acid that comes from a natural fermentation process that takes place in foods with sugar content. Since it is an acid caution should be taken when using a solution stronger than 5%. There is a risk of mild burns from vinegars of 11% and greater. It may cause severe burns and permanent corneal injury if concentrated vinegar comes in contact with the eyes, likely followed by blindness. Vapors may also ignite if exposed to open flame. Therefore, the usual protection is recommended, like gloves and goggles, along with common sense.

Organic farmers have long known the value of vinegar in the garden for its weed killing ability and the fact that it is biodegradable Make note, vinegar is a non-selective killer. It won't harm trees or shrubs, and in field studies, didn't harm corn, however it will kill flowers and grass. Scientists conducting the vinegar study for the ARS are Jay Radhakrishnan, John Teasdale, and Ben Coffman in Beltsville, MD. Their research results indicate that vinegar can kill several important weed species at several growth stages. Vinegar at 10, 15 or 20% acetic acid concentration provided 80-100 percent kill of selected annual weeds.

For farming on a large scale, broadcast application of vinegar would be expensive, approximate costs would be $66 and $99 per acre, for 20% and 30% acetic acid concentrations, respectively. However, band applied vinegar would be cheaper, costing approximately $22 and $33 per acre for 20% and 30% concentrations, respectively. The cost to home gardeners is minimal considering the cost of most herbicides.
